Bus driver docked for manslaughter

LAGOS — A 54-year old commercial bus driver, Ibeabuchi Friday, who caused the death of two people and also damaged an SUV, was Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja magistrate’s court for alleged manslaughter.



The defendant, who allegedly drove recklessly and dangerously on the public high way without regards for other road users, is facing a four-count charge bordering on reckless driving, manslaughter and damage preferred against him by the Police.

The prosecutor, ASP Iranus Nnamonu, told the court that the offence took place on February 8, 2014 at about 10 a.m.

He said the incident took place at Iyana-Ipaja axis along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Nnamonu said Friday, being the driver in charge of one commercial bus with number  plate FKJ 201 XH, drove same dangerously on the public high way which caused the death of two people.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant caused several damages to a Nissan Pathfinder SUV with number plate FKJ 516 AL belonging to the deceased Alhaji Al-Ameen.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him and Magistrate Abimbola Komolafe granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.
